I know I know im a little late to the party but give me a break I was at work until 10 and made it a point to stay away from all types of social media so I could wwatch the game on espn3 replay when I got home, and boy am I glad I did.
I would have to classify this as the Pirates best effort and overall game of this young season. They showed a lot of poise coming back in the second half not letting their poor play from the final 40 seconds carry over to the second half and sink the ship. Again I was a little displeased with the defense specifically in the first half while playing the zone they were late on rotations, and left men open and Carl Jones made them pay going for 22 points in the half. But it was good to see them hanging around despite shooting a poor percentage in the first half and they had a chance to go into the half much closer than the 7 point spread that it ended up being at the break.
Aaron Cosby had his coming out party of the season in the second half fueling a 6-0 run for the Pirates to open the half to cut the Hawks lead to 1. The Pirates were also able to get into the bonus early in the second due to a Technical foul call on Kanacevic and the Hall was able to take advantage making 18 of 25 from the stripe. This was by far Jordan Theodore's best game of the season he finished with 18 points to go along with 10 assists and 7 rebounds, not to mention when the Pirates went to a M2M defense in the second half he played a crucial role in slowing down Jones which essentially brought the Hawks offense to a halt. Herb Pope again has his double double, something that should be common place for him this year, with 17 points and 10 boards to go along with 3 assists, at one point even running the break delivering a nice pass to JT. Pope also showed great confidence from the foul line going 8-9 and if he is able to make free throws with that kind of consistency the Pirates will find themselves with chances to win late in games. Fuquan Edwin again showed a solid all around performance finishing with 17 points 2 boards and 2 steal. He carried them at one stretch late in the first half keeping them close when most of his teammates were struggling. When Fu is scoring it make JT and Pope that much more dangers. Sean Grennan saw his first action of the season although it was only a minute so cant really comment on his play, but to me one player that looks to be having a hard time adjusting to the pace and pressure of the college game is Freddie Wilson he looks uncomfortable with the ball in his hands and thats not a good sign from a point guard. Karlis also contributed to 8 points in the game hitting a 3 during an early stretch in the second half where Seton Hall took control of the game. Auda was the one dull spot in this game he fouled out and couldnt get things going offensively although he did hit his first 3 of the season. He MUST get things going this season for this team to compete with the elite teams in the big east.
I know its still early but the Pirates have improved every game thus far and that is good to see. It is also good to see that they are winning games that last year or the year before they would no have won. I still have to say that i am not a huge fan of the zone defense yes thay played the zone almost flawlessly last night against VCU but tonight it had a ton of holes and when they went M2M with 3/4 court pressure they were really able to stifle the St. Joes offense. Another good win against a team that is going to be near the top of the A-10 conference and now they are playing for some championship hardware lets hope they can bring it home to South Orange.
