Late Monday, the Pirates offered 2012 C Jaleel Cousins (Spanish Fort, AL) according to family friend and AAU coach, Kirven Lang. The 6'10 senior is somewhat of a mystery recruit, more recognized as the "little" brother of Sacramento Kings', DeMarcus Cousins, than his own play. At least, until this point.
Coming out of the 2012 class, Cousins' recruitment is beginning to pick up steam. In addition to the Seton Hall offer, Cousins claims interest from mid and high-majors alike, including: Arizona State, Tennessee Tech, Central Arkansas and Jacksonville State. Today, Cousins isn't rated by the recruiting services of ESPN, Scout, or Rivals and that's largely because he only recently started focusing on improving his game in preparation of playing at the next level. In fact, Cousins recently told Jody Demling (Courier-Journal) that he only started getting serious about the game when he started working with his brother, earlier in the year.
A few years prior, Cousins was considered, "big as hell, but very raw," for a player looking to compete at the next level. As his recruitment begins to pick up, I'm told Cousins is beginning to shed the notion of his raw skill set that was previously displayed during his years at LeFlore High School. Cousins has since transferred and enrolled at Spanish Fort High School for his senior year of high school. As of now, the player doesn't have any plans to reclassify so the upcoming season may be his final chance to showcase his abilities for prospective universities. Cousins athleticism is improving, he's already lost about 15 pounds from the summer and is checking in at about 250 pounds. Spanish Fort opens their season next Tuesday against Robertsdale and Cousins is looking forward to surprising college coaches with his ability to put the ball on the floor and display his range extending to the three point line, both tremendous characteristics for a player of his size.
Cousins recently visited Louisiana Lafayette and although he doesn't have additional visits lined up, he'll surely be taking a few as he doesn't plan on signing until the Spring. Currently, Cousins doesn't have a list of favorites as he continues to assess the list of interested colleges who have begun to check in with more regularity. Seton Hall assistant coach, Chris Pompey is the Pirates' lead recruiter for the unrated center out of the 2012 class. Unrated is fair, but beginning Tuesday, Cousins is out to prove that he's not as raw as one might think.
