Former Seton Hall standout, Jerry Walker (founder of Team Walker), facilitates an annual holiday Toy Drive which helps provide gifts for underprivileged children in Jersey City, NJ. As Walker explained, "These toys are probably the only toys these kids are going to get for Christmas and the holidays; I just can't tell you how much this means to them." Walker went on to tell me that the school for which Team Walker is doing the drive, P.S. 22, is in, "one of the poorest sections of Jersey City, and this event is a great opportunity to turn a sad situation into a happy one. Toys, gift cards or even monitory donations will be accepted, and whoever donates will have their names posted on both our website as well as our newsletter." Jerry and Team Walker will hold an annual Holiday Party for roughly 500 kids, where the gifts will be presented. (As an aside, Walker told to me that they really need gifts for 6th, 7th and 8th graders, as the majority of gifts they have received thus far have been traditional toys for younger children.)
Personally (Rob steps up on his soapbox), I believe we have an obligation to do what we can to help others in need, and this is a wonderful opportunity to show what truly matters in the grand scheme of things. Sure, showing up to a Seton Hall basketball game is terrific; but showing up to a Seton Hall basketball game with a gift that will invariably brighten a child's day, and perhaps overall outlook, is tremendous. I truly hope the Seton Hall community comes out in great numbers both in support of their basketball team, as well as this outstanding charitable cause.
If you'd like to participate, please bring an unwrapped toy (ages k-8 / boys or girls) to the Wake Forest vs. Seton Hall game this Saturday, December 10th 2011 (tip is at 8:00pm.) There will be tables set up at both entrances of the Prudential Center where gifts can be left.
If you're unable to attend the game, but would like to donate gifts to the Team Walker Toy Drive, you may mail gifts to:
