How Herb Pope, Fuquan Edwin, and Jordan Theodore can improve to make next year's team competitive

We all know that losing Jeremy Hazell and wing defender Eniel Polynice is going to be hard to replace. I think we can replace JROB with a combo of Auda and Okoloji. But replacing Hazell and Polynice will take a trio of players to step up. Those 3 players are Herb Pope, Fuquan Edwin, and Jordan Theodore. Here is how those three players need to improve to carry Seton Hall next year:
Herb Pope:
Pope needs to improve a couple things. Offensively, he needs to work on a consistent back to the basket game along with a mid range jumper. If he can get a consistent 18 foot jumper and a consistent go to move when backing down, he can become a star big-man in the Big East. Defensively, he needs to avoid fouls. It seemed that at least 1 time a game he would either commit a reach or an over the back foul. He is too valuable to the team to be picking up stupid fouls. If he can improve these three things I think he can average somewhere in the neighborhood of 16ppg and 10rpg.
Fuquan Edwin:
Edwin has a bunch of things he can improve to become a star. The 1st is his 3pt shooting. He was decent this year in the low 30's %, but to become a star he needs to be able to shoot 38 to 40 percent from 3. This will come with more practice. If he works on his form then he can continue to improve. The next thing he needs to improve is his ball handling ability. This year he did not do much if any ball handling. But next year, he will probably be asked to play a lot of 2guard so he needs to get better at dribbling the basketball. Like his shooting, it will just take hard work. The 3rd and last thing that he needs to improve offensively is his finishing in the lane. Countless times this year, we saw him grab an offensive board and blow the putback. If he works on finishing, along with the other 2 things, he can become a star offensive weapon. Defensively, he just needs to work on positioning. He had a few freshman lapses that I think will go away with experience. If he improves these things he could average somewhere near 13ppg, 5rpg, and 1.8spg.
Jordan Theodore:
I think the player most vital to our success next year is JT. When Jordan was on this year, he was incredible. When he wasn't, he was terrible. Jordan's biggest problem is consistency. If he becomes consistently good, like if he performs like he did in the Georgetown game, we will be a fairley good team. If he plays like he did in the West Virginia game, we will be terrible. If Theodore gets consistent, he can average 15ppg and 5apg.

If these three players raise their games to levels they are more than capable of, Seton Hall can have a decent season. I don't think they will make the NCAA tourney, but a 16 or 17 win season would definitely be possible.

Thoughts

I agree with the Pope analysis, with one more thing to add- FREE THROW SHOOTING. It didn’t blatantly cost SHU any games this year, but he still could be well-served getting that % up to about 65%. That would be okay by me. Any higher number would be unrealistic IMO.

With Fuquan, the shooting and handle need to improve (the handle being more important), and with the finishing point, I think that if he bulks up a little and gains strength, that will help him finish. On defense, Fuquan was very, very good aside from the freshman mistake fouls (including the cardinal sins of fouling jump shooters). His positioning was good. More experience is all he needs on that end, plus the added strength will help him with some of the bigger wings he’ll probably run into (seeing as he’s 6’6", with the rest of the backcourt being undersized, those guys are who he’ll have to guard next year with Jeremy gone).

Jordan has to be more consistent, absolutely, but he can do this just by not trying to do too much. He struggled mightily when Hazell was out because he tried to score, something he’s not really built for. He has to run the team next year, get Pope the ball on the block, get Edwin the ball on the wing, get the freshmen involved, keep everyone happy. You know he brings it on defense- it’s the other end where he has to get better in the offseason.

Nice observations. The numbers you suggested are not un-realistic if the players improve the things we say they have to.

yea I was going to mention that about Pope and about Fuquan's strength

and I agree about JT trying to do too much.

Big Ben: 2 super bowl victories
Joe Flacco: 0 super bowl appearances
Mark Sanchez: 0 super bowl appearances

So for those of you who say Flacco and Sanchez are better postseason QB's than Big Ben because they have more road wins, go home and think about how dumb that reasoning is.

Fuquan

also needs a much quicker first step when he drives. He wasn’t able to drive the ball a lot because his handle wasn’t best, but also because his explosiveness on that first step didn’t allow him to get his defender on his hip and drive past him. Perhaps this was because he wasn’t confident in his handle, but regardless, both need to improve.

I think it was his lack of confidence in his handle

Because I saw him in HS playing against the best of the best (St. Pats, St. Anthony’s, St. Benedict’s, and Boys and girls) and he was blowing by defenders with ease. He embarrased Kyle Anderson in a match-up (granted that Kyle was a sophomore) and also did more than hold his own against St. Pats Michael Gilchrist.

I agree with those observations, especially Fuquan with missing lay ups. I disagree on the points though, if Fuquan can improve in those areas I see him being able to score 20 a night

that meant to say: I think he could score 20 points a game in his JUNIOR year if he keeps improving on those skills but I don't think so in his sophomore year

depending on how the freshmen do next year I could see it next year if he improves his shooting and ball handling and if he’s the go to guy then he could get there

Polynice

anyone can replace Polynice, for me, he was a terrible shooter and a very mediocre ball handler…Dont forget, he held to the ball in the last 45 seconds of rutgers game and refused to pass it to anyone..and missed his free throw and we ended up losing the game..for me, i am glad he is gone….

His defense, leadership, and toughness will be tough to replace
