Seton Hall Basketball: Evaluating the Transfer Pool
**UPDATED 4/16***
Now that Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com has released his renowned transfer list, let the speculation begin.
Like every off-season, just about every coach in college basketball will take a gander at the list of possible transfers in order to better their squad - the Seton Hall staff is no different, they are definitely interested. The Pirates are in obvious need of forwards, as shown by who they are targeting in the 2011 class. With that being said, I narrowed down Goodman's list to players that are of Big East quality and are also forwards. I removed a bunch of forwards that had very small numbers for low-major schools, all guards and Wally Judge of Kansas State - he will not be coming to South Orange.
I added an asterisk and an explanation to some of the players indicating that they are probably the most likely on this shortened list to transfer to Seton Hall. I also separated the mid and low-majors from the "BCS" schools and schools that aren't considered mid-majors (Mountain West, Atlantic-10).
Speculate away:
*Carl Baptiste, 6-8, F, Soph., Saint Joseph’s - Baptiste is from NJ.
*Chris Fitzgerald, 6-8, F, Fr., George Washington - Fitzgerald attended Northfield Mount Hermon, the same high school that Aaron Cosby is from.
Dan Jennings, 6-8, F, Soph., West Virginia
*Jordan Latham, 6-8, F, Fr., Xavier - Latham is from the Maryland/DC area. Assistant coach Chris Pompey has connections to that area.
Eric McKnight, 6-9, F, Fr., Iowa StateMurphy Burnatowski, 6-7, F, Soph., Maine
Braxton Dupree, 6-8, F, Jr., Towson - From Calvert Hall(MD), same HS as Seton Hall target Jonathan Graham. Also in Pompey's recruiting area.
Shaun Pratl, 6-8, F, Soph., Eastern Illinois
*Gene Teague, 6-9, C, Soph., Southern Illinois - Gene was recruited by Seton Hall out of high school.
Kendrick Washington, 6-7, F, Soph., Houston
Any players that wind up transferring to Seton Hall that aren't on this list were either excluded by Goodman, or weren't considered Big East quality by myself. I was pretty lenient with who I considered Big East quality.
*Update 5/10 - Jay Canty (Xavier) to Appalachian State.

you forgot guards
Our staff has shown an ability to take guards when we don’t need them (see Grennan). So i’d wager the staff is look at a guard to transfer or promising a 6’6 kid a chance to play the 2.
In any event, great piece. Thanks for taking the time to narrow the list down. I saw it earlier today, but was too lazy to take a crack at narrowing it to a sizable list.
One last thing….how is pompey tied in to the dc/md area? I know he is the head recruiter out of the ny/nj area, but don’t remember the ties to md/dc.
Pompey & guards
Thanks.
Chris Pompey founded DC Stars (AAU team) and was the head coach for 8 years. He was also an assistant at Hampton (VA).
I removed all guards because I’m 99% sure that the transfers Seton Hall is after are forwards. Everyone 6’4 and under was left out (none were listed as forwards, either). The staff is after two JUCO guards (wouldn’t be smart to bring in 4 freshman guards unless they are studs), Landry and Dylan Talley (I noted this on Twitter today). They probably won’t get either.
At this point, I’d rather the staff save a scholarship than give it to a guard. The staff is working very hard on the 2012 and 2013 classes.

Excellent piece, Chris.
Your favorites for SHU among the list?

Bye, Bye, Bobby!
Most likely?
I’d say Baptiste, Teague & Dupree – totally guessing. All I know is that the staff is looking at more than 1 forward.

GREAT PIECE
THANKS FOR THE UPDATE…..CHRIS WHEN WILL WE BE FINISHED WITH ALL THE RECRUITING AND KNOW THE LINEUP FOR NEXT YEAR?
ARE WE SURE HERB POPE IS STAYING?
THANKS IN ADVANCE CHRIS……IF WE GET MOST OF THE GUYS WERE AFTER WHAT PLACE DO YOU THINK WE WILL COME IN NEXT YR IN THE B-EAST. ANY POSSABILITY OF A TOP 20 ? PROBALLY A REACH…JUST ASKING.
Thanks
Q: When will we be finished with all the recruiting?
A: The spring signing period lasts April 13th to May 18th. Players can come to South Orange after the period (if they are having trouble qualifying) but that is unlikely. Any transfers could come after as well, but they won’t be playing till 2012-13 (likely).
Q: Is Herb Pope staying for sure?
A: 99.9% sure
Q: How will Seton Hall finish next year?
A: Way too far off to consider. If Seton Hall gets its best targets, a Rutgers-type record from this season or a little better (weak OOC) is very possible.
