Seton Hall in Aquille Carr's Top 5, Quality Education Package Deal Brewing and more

2013 PG Aquille Carr (Patterson HS, MD) says Seton Hall is in his Top 5 along with Kentucky, Memphis, UConn and Syracuse.

Seton Hall nearly landed a consensus Top 50 player in Kyle Anderson last Monday. Less than a week later, word broke that 2013 consensus Top 50 player Aquille Carr (Patterson HS, MD) has the Pirates in his Top 5 along with UConn, Syracuse, Memphis and Kentucky. All five schools have offered the sub 5'9 point guard.

Carr is well known for being offered a $750,000 annual contract to play for Lottomatica Virtus Roma, a professional Italian basketball team, this spring despite still being a sophomore in high school. While that might seem ridiculous, Aquille's Hoop Mixtape has been viewed over 2 million times on YouTube and he already has a detailed Wikipedia page.

While his height (between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8) is a possible concern, it doesn't look like Calhoun, Boeheim, Calipari, Pastner or a professional basketball organization are worried - Willard shouldn't be either. Reggie Rankin of ESPN gave Carr flying colors after watching him at the Under Armor Grind Session recently. Carr has the handle and passing ability of Eugene Harvey at his best multiplied by three. While not his forte, Aquille also has a quick release from beyond the arc.

Although we reported the mutual interest between Carr and the staff months ago, the level of mutual interest has caught everyone by surprise. While just about every Pirate fan doubted Kevin Willard's chance at landing Kyle Anderson when the power house programs started offering, he was right there at the end.

How will the recruitment of an equally talented but perhaps more hyped Aquille Carr pan out?

For more on a possible 2012 commitment package consisting of two Quality Education (NC) players and more recruiting updates, follow the jump.

Star-divide

The coaching staff has been after 2012 PG Jevon Thomas of Quality Education (NC) since his de-commitment from St. John's. Only recently did the second piece of a potential package deal surface - the staff just offered 2012 PF Cinmeon Bowers.

With it looking very possible that Kevin Johnson won't qualify and the likelihood that 2012 PF Christopher Obekpa (Our Savior New American, NY) is headed elsewhere, another forward beyond Daniel Dingle (St. Raymond, NY) is being targeted. Like the St. Raymond power forward, Bowers is also in the vicinity of 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-7.

Bowers also holds offers from Iowa, DePaul and Maryland. His offer from the Terps was from Gary Williams, not current coach Mark Turgeon.

UPDATE 9/28, 1PM: Jevon Thomas verballed to Dayton this morning. So much for a package deal.

  • Kareem Canty Update: We have confirmed that Canty is leaving Westwind Prep (AZ) for Marshall to start his official visit this Thursday and will return on Sunday. We've learned from a reliable source that a commitment to Marshall this weekend "would not be surprising"
  • Seton Hall, along with Rider, Bucknell and USC, have expressed interest in 2014 G Jordan Forehand of St. Anthony (NJ).
  • The Pirates remain on the list of 2013 SF DeAndre Bembry of St. Patrick (NJ).
  • Per Hudson Catholic (NJ) head coach Nick Mariniello, "Seton Hall's done a great job" in recruiting 2013 PF Mike Young.
  • It looks like the staff has renewed its interest in DeMatha Catholic's (NJ) 2013 center BeeJay Anya. I still maintain that Seton Hall has little chance in landing one of the best power forwards in the 2013 class but the staff hasn't given up.
  • Despite a recent NBESports piece that says Seton Hall is still actively recruiting 2012 PF Richard Peters of Westwind Prep (AZ), we have reason to believe that the interest is minimal at best. Assistant coach Shaheen Holloway was at Westwind a little over a week ago to only watch Kareem Canty workout.
  • Seton Hall watched 2015 behemoth Karl Towns of St. Joe's Metuchen (NJ) workout on Monday.
  • 2013 G Davon Reed will visit Rutgers this Saturday. A ton of schools have been coming after the Princeton Day (NJ) star recently.

Carr

The Pirates absolutely can’t take the KA route and throw all their ‘13 PG eggs in one basket with Aquille Carr. In reality, I think there’s little chance he comes to SHU. The staff needs to spend equal time on more realistic options so we don’t find ourselves with a bare cupboard once again when Carr decides to go to one of the big boys.

Jevon Thomas off the board and to Dayton. Kareem Canty likely verbals to Marshall this weekend.

Looks like we’re done with ‘12 PGs, unless Willard and Co. want to take a THIRD “Wilson/Grennan” type. As I’ve been savying for two weeks now, save. the. ship.

Thomas

Not buying the academics or “we cooled” crap. If hes a partial qualifier at Dayton, then we can talk. Until then, he didn’t choose Seton Hall.

That's fine with me.

In fact, if we did want either him or Canty and they each passed for another school, I’m glad they did. Willard and company may not realize it, but we can’t afford another player to commit to Seton Hall that cannot qualify.

Blessing in disguise

While that is probably the most embarrassing situation (going after a recruit with baggage and whiffing), I agree that it will probably be better in the long run.

the staff did not whiff

ask SJ’s people in the know, and they will tell you JT is not going to SH for the same reason as SJ’s. Dayton is a good fit for Jevon. It will work out better for everyone involved.

IF true

Then what the hell is the point of offering him, bringing him on campus and watching him workout multiple times, including 2 days before he commits elsewhere.

Waste of the University’s money and makes the program look poorly.

Thomas

When Thomas visited SHU, he emphasized that he was pleased to have an offer from another Big East School. Thomas wanted to play in the Big East, there is no way he just chose Dayton over SHU. there is more to this story. I don’t know if it is academics or something else.

Dumb and Dumber!

Right now our recruiting boils down to talk. So we hand out offers like mints in a coffee shop. And hope that somebody actually bites. If not, the publicity of being on a top 10 guy’s top 5 list makes SHU look good. But in reality we might be dealing with the lower end of the top 150 and not the smartest and not the most stable – the Cantys and Thomases of the world. So far WIllard & Company has avoided the problem – KJ the lone except. And look at the problems that’s causing already in terms of total ships and make up of the "11 team that really needs him. Personally I’d rather look for the diamond in the rough than hand out a ship to a recruit with baggage.

Hello...

I just read on the nytimes.com site that SHU is dropping tuition $21, 000.00 for students in the top 10% of their high school class with combined scores of 1200 on their sats. What they’re trying to do is elevate the academic standards of the students – the Catholic Princeton? Maybe. But I wonder if that had anything to do with Canty and Thomas? And any other academically marginal recruit.

2012 and 2013 Class

Personally I would like to see us get a commitment from Daniel Dingle for 2012. Then add a PG from the 2013 Class- Carr,Ennis,Stewart etc.

by shu1958 on Sep 28, 2011 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

I'm with you on this.

Dingle, Obekpa (stretch) or Webster-Chan (bigger stretch) and save the scholarship (assuming Johnson doesn’t qualify, there is a transfer or Austin doesn’t materialize.)

This is what I want as well

We are involved with a lot of quality players in 2013 including PGs like Carr, Ennis, and Stewart. I would also love to see Reggie Cameron in 2013 even though he does not fill a need at SF. Dingle is the best option right now for 2012.

As my coach, Coach Toal says, "if your tougher than them and you play harder than them and you whoop their ass but only win by six, I don’t give a shit. You still won the game. The media might not like it but we don’t give a fuck about the media, all we care about is winning."

We still need a point guard for 2012

None of the freshman guards play the point. Teams without true point guards have problems on both ends of the court.

I like the way Coach Willard has made the team bigger and how they play together. This is what we will need to be competitive in the BE and NCAA Tourny. However, dispite all of this hard work, without a true point guard, the team will not reach its full potential.

The Coach should use the scholarship on the best point guard out there, subject to character and academics. Given his ability to coach and develope players and to make them buy into his system, it does not have to be someone in the top 100, just talented and coachable.

I agree...

but Is it me or does it seem that there are more students academically at risk? Could make recruiting even harder. Look at the Canty/Thomas problem. Both academic risks. Both wanted to come to SHU. But both were turned away it seems. Makes me think Willard was willing but the administration said no. Maybe they didn’t want to look bad like SJU with 3 disqualified recruits. Especially in light of SHU trying to raise the academic profile of the school.

PG

Aaron Cosby CAN play the point, despite being a combo guard and Freddie Wilson is a point guard.

We’ll see just how badly a 2012 PG is needed by time the spring signing period comes around.

2012 PG

I would really like to see us sign Daniel Dingle and if a Top 150 becomes available in the spring (coaching change at another school that causes a recruit to open up his recruiting) etc. then we can consider bringing in a PG from the 2012 Class. In the spring we will have a better idea of how well Cosby,Wilson can play this season. There is no need to settle for a lower ranked recruit from 2012, because we are involved with some highly ranked 2013 PG’s Carr,Ennis,Stewart etc.

Check the @SOrangeJuice twitter feed for latest on Richard Peters.

SHU had interest earlier in the summer when he listed us along with about ten other teams. Interest is renewed and Peters has listed the Pirates with Washington, Washington St., Clemson. Check the Twitter feed for more:

6'10 PF/C from Westwind Prep in 2012 class.

Not only is he clear of academic issues, but he was an ACT score shy of being able to come out in 2011. This is the type of player we need. Yesterday.

Kareem Canty to Marshall

No surprise there

No concern if Freddie Wilson cna be a true pont guard

Unlike other recruits who choose based on who recruited them, Freddie Wilson wanted to be a Pirate. This will translate in positive ways. He will be open to learning the system which has an emphesis on team play and he will have JT as a mentor.

I was concerned because much of what I read about him suggested he would be a shooting guard in college.

Save the scholarship as there does not appear to be anyone who can help in the class of 2012. Much as many are high on Dingle, he is a small forward. We allready have Auda, Edwin and Karlis this year and Oliver next year.

by 11yearplan on Oct 2, 2011 8:57 AM EDT reply actions

Canty

Why do I feel we dodged a bullet? If Wilson and/or Cosby can handle the point then all well and good. We have to have faith that our staff can make it happen. Right now I’m more concerned about KJ. He needs to be on the court not riding the bench with the phantom team of Teague and Oliver.
