Seton Hall Basketball: Aquille Carr Commitment Roundup, Crime Stopper Recruiting 2013 SG Chris Thomas?
Yesterday afternoon, Patterson High School announced that they would be canceling Aquille Carr's press conference scheduled for Thursday as the school prepares for assessment testing. In a press release, the school stated:
Due to the fact that Patterson High School will be involved with High School Assessment testing this whole week, there will be no press conference regarding Aquille Carr's verbal commitment.
The Baltimore Sun was first to confirm with Patterson head coach Harry Martin what Carr told the world on Friday, he was headed to Seton Hall.
In speaking with Matt Bracken and Glenn Graham, Carr told the Sun:
"It feels great knowing that I had a top school looking at me, I feel good being able to commit to the school."
On the timing of his decision:
"I just figured that it was about time to pick a school, narrow it down to the school that's right for me."
On the Seton Hall coaching staff:
"[The coaches] were happy. They told me that it was probably the best fit for me. The offense revolves around the point guard. I think it's just right."
Carr told the Sun, Seton Hall had a, "great campus" and spoke of his intentions to study sports management in South Orange.
On playing time:
"I’m just going to come in and earn my spot to earn playing time," Carr said, "and I’m going to turn the program around."
Coach Harry Martin added:
"The relationships Aquille developed with the coaches was big in the thought process and he's also excited about having a coach that also was a former guard. Watching their games, Seton Hall is a team on the rise and we liked the kind of pace they played and they give their guards a lot of freedom."
This afternoon, Adam Zagoria spoke by phone to the newest Pirate in his Big East Report for SNY.TV:
Aquille Carr told Zagoria that he will definitely be recruiting other players to join him at Seton Hall. One name he mentioned was 2013 SG Chris Thomas (South Kent School, CT), who the Pirates have offered. Thomas is widely considered one of, if not the best, shooting guards out of 2013. ESPN ranks him as a, '97' and the 13th overall player in the class. Rivals (5th overall) and Scout both have the 6'5 SG pegged as a 5-star recruit.
Carr alone was a huge recruiting win for Kevin Willard and company, but if he's able to lure Thomas to South Orange, we'd suddenly have a monster two-man recruiting class and one hell of a freshmen backcourt. Easier said than done, but it feels good that Carr is enthusiastic to play his future basketball at Seton Hall, pledging not only his services, but also, his assistance with future recruiting. Once again, welcome to Seton Hall!
Aquille Carr will be playing at the Armory in Jersey City on Saturday, January 14th as part of the Dan Finn Classic. Carr and his Patterson teammates will be taking on one-time Seton Hall target, Tyler Ennis and St. Benedict's at 4pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by phone or email via the event's website. The tickets are also good for all six games that will be played at the tournament on Saturday. In his interview with Zagoria, Carr requested that all Seton Hall fans come out for Patterson's game.

If Carr, Willard, and Staff
Could somehow find a way to lure Thomas to SHU over UK, UConn, and every other major team in the nation that would be incredible. Has Thomas narrowed his list or said when he wants to make a decision by?

In late November he said he was down to Kentucky, Xavier & Florida.
Of course, with Carr committing to Seton Hall, who knows if he’ll allow another school to get involved.

Leonard Livingston
Lost in the Thomas hoopla, Carr also mentioned a 6’10 senior big guy from his team he is pushing to the Hall. From the Patterson roster it appears to be Leonard Livingston. Not too much on him at the traditional recruiting sites (rivals, espn). Makes sense, because we wouldn’t want to miss out on any mystery recruits.
Here is what I found in the article below:
“It’s my first time in high school having a big (center),” Carr said. “It’s helped me out a lot. He can do a lot. He can rebound, block shots, he can jump, he can shoot. He’s really got the whole package.”
Said Livingston: “It’s going to open a lot of things up for him. Most of the time when he’s driving, he doesn’t have anybody to come clean up for him. That’s what I do.”"
2 thoughts -
1 – for those wondering if Carr can recruit, the article says 3 kids transferred in to play with Aquille this year, so that is something
2 – for those of you attending the game on Saturday (I’m most likely going), may make sense to keep your eye on Livingston

Thanks for the link.
I still think Seton Hall ends up taking a PG for the 2012 class, which would make Carr the last remaining scholarship through 2013. Of course, unless there is a transfer, but since Livingston is a senior (if he’s the senior Carr talks about in the interview), I think it’s difficult for him to wind up at Seton Hall. If we spend our last ship remaining this year on a PF/C, I think it’d have to be an elite recruit such as Obekpa. I don’t know that they would take on a project, instead of a PG, even though the PG isn’t likely to be an elite recruit either.

I agree we take a 2012 PG
But I’m not so sure we stop there. I think the staff may take a PG and a big in 2012 with the expectation someone will transfer out this year or the next. Not saying the staff will force anyone out, I just think a kid will want to find a place where they can play more consistently (we saw it with Okoloji last year).
After Carr, that leaves us with one ship.
I think that goes to a 2012 PG. After that, I agree with you, AT LEAST one will transfer out. Wouldn’t be surprised if two do, don’t want to publicly speculate on who the two may be, but I think it’s fairly evident at the moment. You’re also right on the comment that we won’t force players out, but again, I think one (if not more) player(s) will want out.

The logistics of recruiting are mind-boggling!
Although Killer Carr is a great get. We need somebody in ‘12 or the program could drop off dramatically. Jaren Sina might have been a better get because he’s ’12 and that better fits are needs.
Pretty sure Sina is a 2013
not sure he is a better fit either. Carr seems like a one man press breaker (like JT), not sure Sina can do that, I think he is more of a combo from what I have read.
Sina is 2013, as well.
Also, as jrockt7 points out, Sina is in fact, more a combo, leaning towards a 2. Carr (size and all) projects as the better college PG.

Sorry about the '12 but my point is...
we still need somebody to run the ship next year or it could get embarrassing. Which just begs the question of why Willard won’t increase playing time for Wilson and Grennan especially when we’re up by a safe margin?Right now RU and SJU are keeping their heads above water but are playing their entire squads. My great fear is that next year all the good that was accomplished this year will be erased.
Nobody on the roster now (or coming in next year) is going to make up the loss of Pope & JT.
We’ve got to ride out this year and hope it’s a magical one.
Heck, if we make the tournament this year a possibly win a couple games in there, wouldn’t you be willing to sign off on a down year next? Sure it’d be nice to eventually have success every year and frequent the tournament every single season, but unfortunately, that isn’t realistic at this point.

You don't have to replace players who graduate.
Others mature and step up and their roles will change. This is not the ’89 team that lost 5 starters and had a losing season in ’90. We are losing two important pieces but everyone will develope physically and improve thier game over the summer. Guys from the bench will take their place and the other 3 starters will continue to improve. We also have 2 players comming in next season, each with 2 years experience.
We did not replace Hazel. JT, Pope, Fu and Auda grew as players. Next year others will pick up where Pope and JT leave off.
Coach Willard’s system is based on eveyone playing a role and trusting that the others on the floor will do the same. Everyone bought into the system this year and will do so next year. Next year’s team can play enough defense to keep them in the game. They are all big and will have debth so they won’t be worn down at the end of the season or the end of the game. They can shoot. While individual talent is important, it is not the key to success under this system.
