Seton Hall Basketball: Pirates Land 2012 PG Tom Maayan (Canarias Basketball Academy); Currently Enrolled at Seton Hall

CBA's Tom Maayan has enrolled at Seton Hall University for the spring semester and will have four years of eligibility beginning next season.

It looks as if Seton Hall's 2012 point guard search has come to a conclusion as they've landed another member of Rob Orellana's, Canarias Basketball Academy, 2012 PG Tom Maayan. In fact, it appears that they landed him long ago. In speaking with a source, Maayan enrolled at Seton Hall for this year's spring semester, is currently taking classes on campus and will officially be considered a freshman with four years of eligibility remaining, next season. Maayan recently tore his ACL and was spotted on crutches at the Louisville game last night, but expects to be back to playing basketball in mid-July.

Over the summer, Maayan played for the U18 Israeli National Team in the Euro Championships averaging 3 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Interest linking Seton Hall to the greatly unknown, Tom Kenji Maayan, began to surface in early December and at the time, I was told he was absolutely a player the staff was was targeting for 2012. Adam Zagoria also reported that Maayan was already qualified in December, which explains why he was able to enroll at Seton Hall this semester.

When reached for comment this morning, Maayan told South Orange Juice, "I enjoy the states and life on Seton Hall campus. I got good teammates, hope they will keep on playing good for the rest of the season and we will be successful this year."

Maayan joins the Pirates after considering offers and interest from Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Virginia. The lefty has been described as a quick, pass first point guard and a very good defender. If he does indeed suit up for the Pirates after recovering from injury, he will become the 4th player on the roster from the CBA, joining fellow alumni Patrik Auda, Aaron Geramipoor and Haralds Karlis.

Mayaan's addition to the roster now creates a logjam at the point for Kevin Willard's staff. Freddie Wilson and Sean Grennan will account for two scholarships as sophomores; Maayan will make the third PG on the roster next season and with Aquille Carr committed in 2013, one would certainly believe a spot will likely open up somewhere on the roster, this offseason.

Welcome to Seton Hall, South Orange and the Pirate family, Tom!

Mystery Recruit U

Another Mystery Recruit. The kid has 2 youtube videos against suspect talent and he has no write-ups on any major recruiting service. Can he step in and start next year? Or is it Wilson’s job to bridge until Carr gets here in 2013? Hmm….

So the 2012-2013 Seton Hall University Pirates roster looks like this:

PG: Wilson, Maayan, Grennan
SG: Cosby, Karlis
SF: Edwin, Oliver
PF: Mobley, Auda
C: Teague, Johnson, Geramipoor

That’s 12… Plus Carr for 2013 as the 13th Ship.

One would expect a transfer in the offseason looking at that roster. I wonder what position we would go after then? A playmaking SG? An athletic running/jumping Center? An offensively explosive PF/C type? Or do we go with 11 players for 2012-2013 and go after another 2013 recruit or a transfer who would be eligible in 2013?

I guess, you can say, I’m already looking past 2011-2012. Oh well….

Mystery Recruit U is back! Although at this point, we can call them, CBU for...

Canarias Basketball University.

or CHU for Canarias Hall University?

As stated in the article, we’ll have 4 players from the CBA on the roster and if we bring in a big from CBA for ‘12 or ’13, it’s possible we could run out an all CBA starting 5!

By default, it’s Freddie’s job to lose, but, will Freddie be here? Will Sean be here? If it is Freddie’s job, you’ve got to think he won’t have much rope and Willard should be willing to let them battle it out before the season begins next year.

We’re still targeting a PF/C for 2012, but like you said we’ve got no scholarships left. Of course, Maayan is not on scholarship this season, so we enter a slippery slope where we continue to recruit a 2012 PF/C, offer them a ship and then, count on or expect one of our points (or another player) to transfer to free up the ship for Maayan. Or else the ship will have to open up for Carr in ’13 if he remains committed.

I think Grennan will transfer

he probably won’t beat out Wilson or Maayan and then when Carr comes, he will be #4 on the depth chart

Again, nice scoop.

Kid is a major wildcard for multiple reasons. Heres hoping…

Other than his unknown factor

It is pretty baffling that there’s little concern about the player coming off a serious knee injury.

serious?

Do you know how many ACL reconstructions are done on athletes a year? Do you know how many high D-1 players have had them already in HS? Probably 15%.

by 1since40 on Jan 30, 2012 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, serious.

First of all, any surgery that requires 6+ months of rehab is pretty serious.

Secondly, consider the speed needed to run the point at the Big East level, the cuts, the athleticism. Are you telling me there’s absolutely no chance Maayan loses that post surgery and doesn’t lose a step? How will the player rebound from being away from the game for months? There’s no chance he could potentially be anything less than what Seton Hall recruited him to be? And oh by the way, with Maayan on board and Carr committed, barring transfers, we’re out of room for the next two years.

You’re telling me one in every six (or) seven “high D-1 players” tore their ACL’s in high school when they were 15-17 years old, rehabbed and recovered well enough to play at an elite level? I’d love to see some statistics backing that claim. I think it’s quite ridiculous.

Bad Move!

Freddie has shown little. Sean has not been allowed to show anything. And Tom has a bad knee and none too stellar stats. So far the CBA guys have not adapted very well to American style play. And seem to be slow learners. There’s also the question of fire in the belly. Outside of Pope and Theodore who seem tired at this point from playing too many minutes Oh, and throw in FU, the fire, the passion to win is nonexistent. And we are losing big time. Yes, last night was better. they’re moving in the right direction. But the CBA guys are not helping. They are either in foul trouble or fouling the opponent. Adding another potentially passionless player with a low skill level is not the answer…. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose 3 players – you heard it first here.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some players moving after the year.

Do you have a specific three your thinking of or just assuming a bunch will transfer? Three might be a little high, but wouldn’t be surprised to see 1-2 go.

I wouldn't be surprised to see...

Wilson, Grennan leave because of playing time. And Auda because he seems to feel uncomfortable trying to adjust to American style bball.

I can't see any of the CBA guys leaving...

A part of me would be very surprised to see KJ suit up. We’re hearing all the right things, but I’m still not sold on his commitment to Seton Hall.

Karlis

Karlis showed some pretty good fire last night. He was all over the court and when he got called for the block on the side – he did start yelling in disappointment at the call. I think Karlis is learning and he’s been playing a lot more minutes the last couple of games.

They have moments but...

it’s like paint drying – the watching… the waiting. Guys this is it. There’s no redo’s. You’re young, you’re healthy, you have potential, you have a free ride to a good education. You may never play pro ball, you may never play again after 4 years. But those years can be glorious. – maybe the best years of your life. Take advantage of it. Act like it. If this is your passion. DO IT!

The only one of the CBA guys I like is Karlis

Auda seems lazy and while AG tries, he just does not seem to have the talent

Can't believe the news of Maayan hadn't leaked prior to today.

I was out of commission and out of the country for the last eight days, otherwise I would have sooner. Thought for sure, a student writer living on campus would have picked up on it sooner.

Maayan sounds like the best of the four players we have gotten from the CBA

I just read the Zags Blog article and he is the only one of these CBA guys we have that had plenty of other D1 offers and interest.

Every one of the players that have come from CBA have been more hyped than the last.

Remember all the hype surrounding Auda going into his sophomore season? They’re just such large unknowns. The two video clips on Maayan show him playing against some seriously inferior competition.

This is no time to be negative about the program.

I am as unhappy about 4 loses in a row as all of us. However, last night you saw them start to break out of the slump. Hustle and defense no only kept them in the game but also kept them believing they could win. JT had his game under control and Herb was trying new ways to keep his shot from being blocked. Mobley looked good and Auda look good off the bench. The Coach went to the bench earlier to keep the guys fresh and it showed in the 2nd half. Karlis is back. They almost beat Louisville while shooting >30%. They still believe in themselves and so should we.

Slumps are harder to get out of when the coach has only been around 2 years.

They are timid on offense. Herb does not go up agressively, they are afarid to drive to the rim and we all saw Fu walk away from a 3 at the end of the game. This is nothing more than a mid-season wall that they will get over. Once Fu puts it back together, and he will, opponents won’t be able to key on Herb and JT, the agressive offensive play will return and the shots will fall. The offensive swagger will be back.

I don’t understand how we can be down on this recurit. He is a 6’1" poiint guard who played on his country’s olypmic developement team. He is allready in school and paying his own way. He is a big true point guard, who played on the international stage and WANTS TO BE HERE. Competition for the position will be good for the team and should not drive any of the players away.

Tom will have a year under his belt and Freddy & Grennan will have two when Aquille arrives. Aquille and the team will benefit from that.

Other than speculation, is there any basis to believe that Freddy, Grennan or Johnson will not be on the team next year?

I think it's understood player(s) will be leaving the program.

Seems to be the case every year, on most division one teams when kids don’t get playing time. That’s just the way it is. Easy for kids who were recruited to play basketball to become basketball when not seeing PT when it’s promised to them elsewhere. Only time will tell what happens, but I’d be very, very, surprised if the roster was 100% in tact next year.
