In the midst of locking up the first piece of his crucial 2014 recruiting class in Ismael Sanogo yesterday, Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard is also exploring several 2014 junior college options at guard.
The staff has recently offered guards Gary Payton II (Salt Lake CC, Utah), Carlos Morris (Chipola College, Fla.), Iakeem Alston (Sheridan College, Wyo.), and Kadeem Allen (Hutchinson CC, Kan.)
Gary Payton II - Yes, this is the son of NBA standout Gary Payton. The younger Gary averaged 9.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg and 3.7 apg in 23.6 mpg as a freshman at Salt Lake CC. According to Salt Lake assistant Landon Cosby, Payton is "super athletic, a good defender, has great instincts, hits big shots, and is Salt Lake's leading rebounder [as a guard]." Landon also added that Gary Payton II is improving his skills off the bounce, and has capable point guard abilities (vision, unselfish.)
Kevin Willard is recruiting Gary, who has also been offered by Arizona State. Here is a highlight tape from last season.
Carlos Morris - Seton Hall was after Carlos when he was coming out of Arlington Country Day (Fla.) as part of the 2012 class. Morris is now proving his worth at Chipola College by averaging 13.3 ppg, 4 rpg & 2.1 apg as a freshman last year.
Morris was part of an ACD package deal to South Carolina which included fellow guard Ian Baker (who was committed to Providence prior to S. Carolina), whom Seton Hall was also targeting. Morris wound up de-committing from the Gamecocks and went the junior college route. He was a Top 150 rated player in 2012 with other offers from Arkansas, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, South Florida, and more.
Perhaps Seton Hall's loyalty will pay dividends here for a clearly talented guard.
Iakeem Alston - After a high school career at Dunbar (Md.) that included back-to-back state championships, Alston took a prep year at Princeton Day (Md.) before opting for the junior college route. Iakeem averaged 9 ppg, 3 apg, and 2.6 rpg in 28 mpg at Sheridan College (Wyo.) as a freshman last season.
Despite averaging 16 ppg, 5 apg, and 3 rpg at Dunbar as a senior, he only received low-major interest from schools like Howard and Mount St. Mary's. There is nothing on the Internet about his prep year at Princeton Day, which I'm attempting to look into.
Kadeem Allen - The coaching staff is after one of the most talented junior college guards out there. Kadeem Allen of Hutchinson CC averaged 17.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg and 3.9 apg en route to becoming the only freshman named to 1st team All-America last season.
Allen is being pursued by top schools like Arizona, Kansas State, Marquette, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Indiana, and more. It looks like he will play alongside Isaiah Lewis and Darrick Wood (of St. John's affiliation) at Hutch in the fall.
- Seton Hall is the latest school to offer 2015 PF Tyler Lydon (New Hampton Prep, NH). He holds offers from Boston College, Boston University, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Rutgers, and more.
- Top 100 forward Terry Larrier (Phelps School, Pa.) is still listing Seton Hall along with VCU, Florida, Miami, West Virginia, Minnesota, Rutgers, Providence, SMU, Arizona & UConn. Larrier visited Seton Hall in late June.
- 2014 guard Lourawls "Tum Tum" Nairns of Sunrise Christian Academy (Kan.) has an offer from Seton Hall. Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, SMU, Iowa, Memphis, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Creighton, and Minnesota are also in talks with the Top 150 guard.
