Maurice Harkless, a 6-7 junior wing at Forrest Hills High School in Queens, NY, becomes the latest recruit (class of '11) to choose Connecticut over Seton Hall, among other schools. As you'll remember, in November, Cleveland Melvin committed to UConn over SHU, Depaul, USF and TCU. From the NY Daily News:
At 6-7 and 180 pounds, Harkless needs to add muscle and strength to his frame. As a junior, he'll certainly have time to do it. Harkless is coming off an injured foot, but his 21 points in a non-league loss to Wings Academy in his first game back on Sunday and his 16 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Campus Magnet on Tuesday were an indication he's ready to lead the Rangers again this season.Sports Illustrated dives into Seton Hall history a bit in two different articles. First, they look at the top 10 moments in MSG history and Seton Hall finds itself on the wrong side of the record books:
The others included Oscar Robertson's 56-point effort against Seton Hall in 1958...
The article is worth checking out as Irwin Dambrot's story is a must-read in itself. Dambrot was part of CCNY's double championship team, which won both the NCAA and NIT championships in a two week span in 1950. Despite battling Parkinson's disease, a broken hip this summer and a bout of pneumonia, nothing was going to prevent Dambrot from missing Wednesday's ceremony at MSG.
Looking at the emergence of Latino players through college basketball, Sports Illustrated again mentions Seton Hall basketball:
It's been 20 years since Seton Hall, whose international players included Puerto Rican forward Ramon Ramos, lost in overtime in the NCAA final to Michigan. But the seeds of this Latin American infusion started a few years later with the Dream Team.
