Seton Hall Basketball: Brandon Mobley Cleared to Play

New, 10 comments

Hey, an early Christmas present!

According to both Kevin Willard (via twitter) and Jerry Carino, freshman forward Brandon Mobley has finally been cleared to return to the team following shoulder surgery this offseason.

Mobley, a 6'8" forward from Savannah, Georgia, can immediately step in and help the frontcourt depth for the Pirates. Willard also confirmed that Mobley will suit up for this Sunday's game against Mercer.

Reaction: Getting Mobley back is huge at this point in the season for depth purposes. The Pirates have three more games before conference play starts, and in two of them, the Pirates should have a chance to work him into the rotation (Mercer and Longwood; all bets are off in Dayton). Having those game experiences and the amount of practice time in between before conference play will be key as the Pirates have the mammoth front lines of Syracuse and UConn in that opening set of Big East contests.

Skill-wise and production-wise, don't expect much from Mobley yet, though. He has to get back into game shape, and he has to gain confidence in his repaired shoulder, before he can show what he can really do. Once he does that, he's a face-up power forward with a nice mid-range jump shot that occasionally can extend out to the three point line. He also has good athletic ability, so look to Mobley as the season rolls along to provide a live body down low.

For now, he can provide some valuable frontcourt depth that will not only be critical for the other frontcourt players, but also for the rest of the team because now Coach Willard (if he so desires) can play two bigs more consistently, helping to save the legs of Haralds Karlis and Fuquan Edwin, and maybe even Aaron Cosby. It will be interesting to see how quickly Mobley is able to assimilate into the system over the next couple weeks.
