Bubble Watch: February 28-29th

New, 24 comments

With Seton Hall back into the thick of national bubble conversations following their heartbreaking loss to Rutgers, a daily Bubble Watch leading up to Selection Sunday (or when the Pirates prove that they are surely a lock) seems fitting.

All emboldened teams below are bubble teams - you want to root against them. In the case of two bubble teams playing each other, it's usually best to root against the team that is in worse shape.

BTN = Big Ten Network

Tuesday, February 28th:

Mississippi @ Arkansas (7PM ESPNU) - Important bubble matchup in the SEC. Both teams are on the outside looking in. This is an elimination game of sorts.

DePaul @ West Virginia (7PM ESPN3) - Must win for the Mountaineers who are 2-7 in their last nine with wins over Pittsburgh and Providence.

Connecticut @ Providence (7PM ESPN3) - UConn nearly pulled the big upset of Syracuse on Saturday but fell short. They are currently a 9/10 seed and can't afford a slip-up in Providence.

Minnesota @ #15 Wisconsin (8PM BTN) – After Minnesota’s 19 point loss to Indiana on Sunday, the Golden Gophers are looking towards the NIT. Any slim chance they have at making the NCAA tournament would start with a win at the Kohl Center tonight.

Xavier @ St. Louis (9PM) - Major NCAA implications in this Atlantic-10 game. St. Louis lost a head-scratcher to Rhode Island over the weekend and now find themselves on, or very close to, the bubble. Xavier, on the other hand, has been on the bubble and really need this win.

UCF @ Memphis (9PM) – Memphis(8-10 seed) is in better shape than UCF (first 4 OUT), who is firmly on the bubble. The Knights are looking for the double over Memphis as they beat the Tigers 68-67 in mid-January. This would be UCF's third Top 50 win -- surely boosting their resume.

Wednesday night's bubble match-ups are after the jump.

Wednesday, February 29th:

#7 Marquette @ Cincinnati (7PM ESPN2) – After a disappointing loss at South Florida on Sunday, the Bearcats are looking to solidify their at-large bid. While currently in (10/11 seed), a win over a Top 10 team would seal the deal.

South Florida @ #18 Louisville (7PM ESPN3)The Bulls of South Florida kept on rolling this weekend but still have work to do. They are just 1-7 against the Top 50 and 4-10 away from home. A win here would strengthen that weakness if their resume.

Saint Joseph’s @ St. Bonaventure (7PM) – The Hawks have come out of nowhere and are now firmly in the bubble picture. A win over the Bonnies doesn’t do much for their resume but it’s a must win to stay alive.

Dayton @ Richmond (7PM) – Three Top 50 wins have kept Dayton in the bubble conversation but 4 bad losses might be too much to overcome. A must win for the Flyers.

Mississippi State @ South Carolina (8PM ESPN3) – Always entertaining Mississippi State has lost five straight but still find themselves on the bubble. They need to win here and against Arkansas at home on Saturday to stay alive. Even Bulldog forward Arnett Moultrie doesn't think they can turn it around.

#11 Ohio State @ Northwestern (8:30PM BTN) – The Wildcats kept their NCAA dreams alive after they squeaked out a win in Happy Valley with the help of controversial officiating. Still firmly on the bubble, the Wildcats would love to add a second Top 25 win to their resume.

Miami (FL) @ NC State (9PM ESPN3) – NC State had their chances but lost three consecutive games to Florida State, North Carolina & Duke in the midst of a four game losing streak. Miami, on the other hand, is very much in the bubble picture following an upset of Florida State over the weekend.

Oklahoma @ Texas (9PM ESPN2) – A must win for Texas preceding their trip to Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday.

#17 UNLV @ Colorado State (10PM) – The Rams are still hanging around the bubble thanks to two Top 25 wins (San Diego State, New Mexico). Another big opportunity tomorrow night.
