According to Jerry Carino, former Northwestern assistant and Rutgers head coach Fred Hill Jr. is close to joining the Seton Hall coaching staff.
There were brief rumors of a Fred Hill return to South Orange after he was relieved of his position at Northwestern following the firing of head coach Bill Carmody. Those rumors had since cooled off until now, according to Carino.
Fred Hill, a recruiting specialist, was an assistant at Seton Hall from 1998-2001 under Tommy Amaker. Hill then coached four losing seasons at Rutgers from 2006-10 before resigning in April of 2010 following an incident at a Rutgers baseball game. Known for his recruiting ties in the New Jersey area, Hill helped Bill Carmody land current Seton Hall target Jaren Sina at Northwestern. Sina received a release from Northwestern and is now considering Alabama, Indiana, Seton Hall, and Northwestern. Jaren is currently on a visit to Alabama.
To make room for Fred Hill on the Seton Hall staff, a current member would have to leave. While he is far from a favorite for the Florida Gulf Coast job, Seton Hall assistant Chris Pompey did express interest in the position, so he may be looking elsewhere. Pompey was recently rated as the 28th best assistant coach by Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop.
UPDATE 4/11 8:50PM: Jeff Goodman of CBSSports confirms the assumed: Seton Hall assistant coach Chris Pompey is leaving.
UPDATE 4/12 2:30PM: Chris Pompey is likely to end up on Reggie Theus' staff at Cal State Northridge. Looks like we're waiting on this to happen before the announcement of Fred Hill's hiring.
If Seton Hall does hire Fred Hill, the Pirates' recruiting ability will certainly receive a boost, especially in regard to Jaren Sina.
