After losing out on 2015 guard/wing Dupree McBrayer (Minnesota) and 2015 power forward Horace Spencer (Auburn) over the past week, Seton Hall is honing in on another local recruit to become their first Class of 2015 commitment.
As reported late last week by Jeremy Schneider, Sports U and Roselle Catholic (N.J.) product Chris Silva starts a visit on Seton Hall's South Orange, N.J. campus today. We were able to confirm that the visit is an official, which shouldn't be taken for granted as local recruits have designated unofficials for Seton Hall in the past due to the campus' close proximity to their home. Official visits are restricted to 48 hours and other regulations.
A true post forward with raw offensive skills at this point, Chris Silva is thought to have been favoring Villanova and Seton Hall since the July recruiting periods, where he ran with local program Sports U. Furthermore, the Wildcats, who already have a commitment from finesse 2015 power forward Tim Delaney (WE R1/Blair Academy, N.J.), have been whispered to be the favorites to land Silva. However, there is strong reason to believe that Seton Hall is a close second here, if not even with Villanova. Kansas State, Rhode Island, and South Carolina - the last of which have scheduled an official with Silva on 9/12 - are also part of Chris' final five schools, though they aren't expected to challenge the two local Big East schools as of now.
UPDATE: Apparently Chris Silva has not yet set up a visit to Villanova, while scheduling officials to Rhode Island (9/3) and Kansas State (TBD.), along with the previously reported trip to South Carolina (9/12). Unless the Wildcats set a visit up, one would have to assume that Jay Wright and his staff dropped out of the race for Silva.
Ranked 75th by 247Sports.com and a three-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout, Chris Silva was tracked by Seton Hall throughout the July 'live recruiting periods' this summer, had a workout watched by the coaching staff in April, and took in Seton Hall - Villanova at Prudential Center on January 7th after being offered by the Hall last October. Silva projects as a high-potential back-to-the-basket post forward that will immediately contribute defensively (blocks, uncanny natural instincts) for a high-major, but may require a year or so of Division-I ball under his belt to develop a consistent offensive game.
With 2015 PF/C Jonathan Nwankwo (Victory Rock Prep, Fl.) the only other post forward left on Seton Hall's immediate radar, Chris Silva is a high priority for the coaching staff and has been for a while.
