With only Roselle Catholic's Chris Silva, who announces Friday, left on Seton Hall's list of post forwards for the 2015 recruiting class, I had written at least once that junior college prospects may surface in the future.
One of them did just that, as Seton Hall has been linked with Hutchinson C.C. (Ks.) power forward DeShawn Freeman.
Arizona State, Oklahoma, Va Tech, Seton Hall also recruiting DeShawn Freeman of Hutch.— Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) September 17, 2014
Zagoria's initial tweet stated that St. John's assistants Rico Hines and Tony Chiles, along with Nebraska, are halfway across the country taking a look at Freeman. More specifically, Arizona State and Oklahoma watched Freeman yesterday while USC was also expected to be in Kansas today, according to JucoRecruiting.com. Arizona State has set up an official visit for the 6-foot-7 power forward from September 25-27th.
DeShawn Freeman's scouting report:
Freeman is forward who has the skill and ability to step away from the basket and attack off the dribble. He is also very good in the low and mid post. Due to his ability to go inside and out, he creates matchup problems for opposing players. He is a good athlete and a very good rebounder who has good timing when the ball is coming off the rim. Last season he averaged 16.4 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 56% from the field.
Arizona State may be considered a favorite at this point, especially since they parted ways with junior college center Jordan Washington, who was arrested for allegedly shoplifting DVDs a few days ago.
Originally an unranked 2013 prospect from Rocky Mount Prep (N.C.), Freeman sported offers from a handful of local mid and low-majors out of high school.
What this means for Seton Hall: With three scholarships to work with, the coaching staff has irons in a couple fires right now. They are obviously pursuing Isaiah Briscoe very hard, while they have an in-home visit with 2015 shooting guard Dalton Soffer (Poway H.S., Calif.) scheduled for next Wednesday. Further, they are still evaluating Wings Academy (N.Y.) point guard Desure Buie, who will reportedly be watched tomorrow by the staff. At this point, Buie may be a backup guard option if Soffer and Briscoe go elsewhere.
As for forwards in 2015, this doesn't necessarily indicate anything about Chris Silva. From what I've been told to this point, Seton Hall has a very good shot at landing the Roselle Catholic forward during Friday's 3:15 press conference, which I will be at. Seton Hall's interest in Freeman does show that the staff is eyeing junior college forward options, a route that would appear to be necessary if Silva chooses Rhode Island or South Carolina on Friday afternoon.
