NEWARK - Butler guards Kellen Dunham (21 pts, 5 rebs) and Roosevelt Jones (23 pts, 8 rebs) helped power the Bulldogs past No. 21 Seton Hall 79-75 in overtime at Prudential Center on Tuesday night. Sterling Gibbs poured in a stellar 30 points while Khadeen Carrington came on late with 20 points off the bench for the Pirates, who drop to 3-2 in conference play while Butler improves to 3-2.
Seton Hall looked stuck in the mud, scoring just one basket over the first six minutes of the game, but were sparked by a Haralds Karlis three-ball coming out of the under-12 timeout. The shot was on the front-end of an 11-3 run that benefited from Kevin Willard putting some full court pressure on Butler which disrupted their effective half-court offense.
After trading baskets through the under-eight timeout, Sterling Gibbs continued his hot outside shooting by nailing a pair of triples while Angel Delgado (12 pts, 15 rebounds) infused energy and offense into the low blocks to fuel an 11-2 run.
Holding a four-point lead at the half, Butler overwhelmed their hosts with a 13-1 surge out of the break. Seton Hall showed poor shot selection in their first few possessions and the Bulldogs took advantage via their guards. Roosevelt Jones was effective off the dribble all night with his strength while Alex Barlow (6 pts, 3 asts) and Kellen Dunham complimented him with efficiency. The trio scored 15 of Butler's first 16 points coming out of the half and 50 of their 79 total points.
Sterling Gibbs kept Seton Hall within a few possessions by drilling several big second half shots and finally got to the basket in transition while Angel Delgado chipped in with a pair of tough scores that cut Butler's eight-point second half advantage to four at 57-53.
Andrew Chrabascz (12 pts, 5 rebs) scored a tough basket and sank an attached free throw to answer, but Seton Hall tied the game at 63-63 with 1:10 to play after Khadeen Carrington completed an and-one to complete a string of five-straight points. Carrington was huge for Seton Hall down the stretch and complimented Gibbs' scoring output.
The game went to overtime after Kellen Dunham was shut down by Gibbs on Butler's final possession of the game, but the Bulldogs would wind up edging the game in the extra period. Butler pulled in four offensive rebounds late in the overtime, giving Jones and Dunham extra possessions to put Seton Hall away via made free throws and attacking the basket.
After Khadeen Carrington scored on a quick out of bounds play to tie the game at 67 in regulation, he missed on another quick set play when Seton Hall was down three late in overtime to seal the game for Butler after a Jackson Aldridge made free throw.
